whyt, the show. A collaborative project designed for the Dunedin Fringe Festival 2008. A show devised with the conceptual theme whyt, focused more on the process around conceptual work. The considered merging of improvisation and composition, theatre, installation and spontaneous perfomance. We approched fine Dunedin sound and visual artists and performers to commit to the entire space within the gallery for the duration of the performance. To remain engaged in the act of performingbeyond the traditional confines of the tightly defined 'gig'.

whyt also marked the lauched of the book whyt. A compilation/scrapbook of the last two year of the mr sterile Assembly. It contained a selection of some of the current song lyrics, art work from band members, and art work from others who have assisted in the project of this period of time. Images inspired from text and photographs manually stuck in. And a 5 track CD, the songs a re a few that appeared on the 15 Minute Crib Indonesian tour disc of 2006.

PRESS RELEASE:

A musical mixed-media event at the None Gallery featuring the Wellington avant-punk performance artists mr sterile Assembly alongside a collection of the adventurous music makers and performers from Dunedin, CRUDE, Lee Noyes, & Alex MacKinnon, dance, and video presentation including a new animation from the Wallace award winning Dunedin artist James Robinson. The mr sterile Assembly blur the lines between theatre performance and a mass of music styles. These can encompass anything from free-jazz to exquisitely tight and rhythmic avant-punk, harmony, melody, tinnitus. Visually enhanced by strong visual components combining elaborate costume and video projection, the group creates an intense visual and sonic experience.

whyt: pronounced white, fight, whitey

-an exploration of association and symbolism. An intersection of improvisation meets composition, when whyt noise creates rhythm.

-A deconstruction/reconstruction of points of reference, personal, cultural, perceptual, reverential and contextual.

-A real time cut-up of image, sound, stance and opportunity when, as Burroughs states, the future leaks out.

What damage is obtained by the quest

...for purity? that holy grail of the unblemished skin free from original stain,

...for innocence?- the crutch applied that assumes wisdom through the lack of experience,

...for scientific modernity? - the surrogate parent of catagorisable racism and advancement of empiric thought.
