Cara: The Cheski republica!!!!
hit the road jack!
wow wow wow so i be in Tabor....about an hour and a half on a winding
windy romantic train from Prague which i didn¨t see..
we, the mr.sterilers are planted in an old stone mill house now an
artists centre Cesta (www.cesta.cz)... it is
at the base of a hill, on the OTHER side of the old city walls where
many a head was likely chopped.¨ that made me shriek
Tabor is a small town...winding idylic, rusty, cobbled and smoothly
gritty. We are told that Czech people are shy...and they do seem to
be. Not much eye giggling going on. Nor the raucous spittle of china.
and i am finding it difficult to be ununderstandable again. a complete
foreigner with no tongue.
days are fast and tense...too few hours in the
¨studio¨¨...but there
is not more time! where is the time for meditating, studying chinese,
swilling wine...qigong...reading? less retreat...more pressure
cooker. seven cuckoos thrown together for days long...we have come up
with two new songs and they are masterpieces as far as mr sterile
goes...
so much love from the czeskywesty!!!!!!!

FRI Roznov
pod radhostem (CZ)
chrissie: VRAH. First gig in europe. Squatted punk venue in a small leafy town in the north east of czech. Arrived with just a cell phone number and a name which we duly called. An hour later martin arrives on his bike and we creep along behind him thro the back streets and pull up in a kind of industrial area. Vrah itself is a long warehouse with a bar, studio space, exhibition space, anarchist record/book shop. An easy place to chill and wind down after our first big drive. The gig itself was a stonker, both bands played alongside a local group called Myom. A wicked first gig which was truly celebrated afterwards!!!!!!!
kieran: Had a great first gig in Eastern Europe at VRAH (means murder), ditzy, sterile and local psycidelic-space-industrial rock. Once sterile finished people came and commented on how we sounded like a scitish group called Archbishop Kebab, I'd never heard of them but Martin from VRAH brilliantly dug out a cassette of their final album and it has been regular listening in the van ever since.

SAT Cesky Tesin, Liberte
with Apatia and Eye for Eye (CZ)
Liberte photos from HERE
and Loscrudos, cheers.
chrissie: Cesky Tesin Up to the polish/czech border
to the Liberte Jazz Club. Not quite sure what to expect other than we
were going to be playing alongside a really famous polish Punk band
called Apatia. Underground venue, really dark low ceilings already
filling up with a hard core crowd as we pack in. The gig itself again
goes really smoothly. The only hitch being that the drummer from Apatia
massacred our kick, but thankfully they played last. Again beautiful
people, much swopping of CDs and contact details. Stayed the night in a
tiny flat not far from the bar. Amazing hospitality. Big thanks to
Raphael and his amazing breakfast.
kieran: A great second show, huge crowd in a fantastic venue on the Czech/Polish boarder town of Teshin. Ditzy 1st, Eye for an Eye, sterile and then Polish punk/hardcore heros Apatia. It seemed potentially intimadating at first but the the audience really warmed up quickly. By the end of the night there were smiles and hugs and much making of new friends.
10
SUN
chrissie: A long slow cruise to Slovakia thro the
mountains and along wide rolling rivers. Got nicked five minutes across
the border for speeding which was a bit of a fucker. Bye bye a thousand
crowns. At the other end of the day, Kieran gets nicked for illegal
parking. Bye bye a Thousand crowns. A big fucker, especially as we had
just pulled over to phone Chris to say that we had arrived. What we
didn't realise was that we had pulled over just before the police
station in a no stopping zone. The other bastard was that we had driven
too far and had to back track to meet up with Sabot. But we caught up
eventually and so began 3 days of talking, beer drinking and eating at
strange hours of the day.

MON in Presov, Košice, GES Klub, (Slovakia) w/SABOT
& Chiki
liki tu-a (mr sterile Assembly only)
chrissie: In Presov for the next three days. Kieran
and I staying with the guitarist and his partner, Strabka from
Chil-liki-tua in the gypsy quarter of the town and the rest of the band
crashed in the stadium motel. Most of the day we just chilled and then
in the evening we trucked down to Kosice for this gig in a big venue
with national pop heros Chiki-liki tua and Sabot. A new experience for
this line up of Sterile to play on such a huge fuck off stage with
roadies, a sweet PA, smoke machines and disco lights to a rocking
teenage audience. Anyway, we played a good set and it was great to have
space to move.
kieran:Its nice to be able to hang out with Slavka,
Lubo, Chris and Hilary for the day. We head off to Kosice for the show
and its a huge venue thats a cross between Happy Days and a Tango hall.
Large stage, a shit-kicking PA with all the bells and wistles. It
sounded great. The only problem is that today I feel like Im losing my
voice. So my signing sounds kinda like Tom Waits, kinda like Renee
Gayer, kinda like puberty 2. Great show though, aside from the voice,
think i played really well. Sabot sounded huge with a massive bass end
and Chiki Liki tua are just the heros of this town. The crowd love them
and their newly refined line-up, now a 3-piece, is very slick, they
have a very commanding and entertaining stage presence, and from what
I've been told
,are also very funny to listen to.
12
TUE in Kosice, Wave klub (Slovakia) w/SABOT
chrissie: Presov Second slovakian gig in Presov but
at quite a different venue called the Wave Klub, the kind of hip trendy
bar/cafe in town. Sabot, ditzy and sterile played and it was such a fun
gig. Again out to eat in the early hours of the morning.Body clocks
completely screwed, but all of us very happy.
Cara: Ahoj! It is 6pm on a Tuesday in Presov,
Slovakia.
This citycentre is beautiful... shops closing early...paved cobbled
lined with coloured oldness... i just floated into the beautiful
church in the centre...and there were many people in
there...reciting...or praying along with some kind of recording. but
it wasnt tacky like that.... just so high lofty clear and old...
quiet...peacefull..hollow..ancient..dormant..so different from my
perception of christianity in NZ.. I look at europeans here with the
same eye as i would the chinese... They are the indigenous peoples of
europe....with their own strange customs...flaws...hilarities...beauty.
and they seem very different from us colonial offshoots..who have lost
contact with that rounder collective history...memory? that is in the
streets
and the land and the faces and the buildings and the food. things are
more
grounded, connected.... perhaps?
but at the same time...i really really see that people are just people
everywhere....and cultural superiority of any kind is complete
rubbish.
We are the rockstars. i signed three autographs last night. we played
on a huge lit stage to the screaming teenage fans of our friends
friends band "chiki liki tua" on the best sound sytem in all of
slovakia. hilarious and funny but i lost concentration after my mic
stand fell over when i leaped to the front..and then couldnt find it
when i got bak ...!
Tonight is only our fourth show and i-ve got to say it aint easy being
a touring rockstar. I"m the non boozer in the band and don"t even
have hangovers to accompany lack of sleep .
Our first gig in Rosnov PR, Czech was superb... in a sleepy hilly town
in a dingy venue called Vrah that was 128 Abel Smith st, Thistle Hall
and the Freedom Shop in one. Audiences here are gobsmacked. Enter
seven hooligans in white and black and red and sequins and tutus and
giant wigs and hats and white faces. And they LOVE the
music....Welllington??!!! whats the matter with u?
Second gig we played after destiny church blackshirts singing death
metal in an underground room swarming with skin head types. I was
scared and didnt want to put my clown suit tutu on. but we did and
they loved it. And then Polish rastas appeared and it was just like
home and we danced to ska til the barmaid started playing songs with
"go home" lyrics. NZ i realise has such a roots reggae culture...
none of the screaming raging blood scaulding type....
kieran:This show seemes to me to be the one where
everything goes wrong before hand, lost my small trashy cymbals , at
Cesky Tesin I think, the snare skin has a cut in it and i replace it
was a old one Ive been carrying around with me in my snare bag for
years. Headaches come easy today. This I
cold have is quite wearing me out.

WED in Poland, Zabrza, Skansen Mine
sterile photos by Tomasz Palej
chrissie: Zabrze After saying goodbye to the lovely
Strabka and Martin and Lubo from Chiki-liki-tua we began the long haul
to Poland. 10 hours later after our first introduction to the seriously
inconsistent road conditions in Poland we get to Zabrze. Once again we
just have a cell phone number and a name. This time though the pressure
is on as Chris had told us that the gig was at 6 and we get to Zabrze
at 7. We ring and a lovely but seemingly strung out Eva on the other
end tries to get me to explain where we are. All I can say is that we
are at a BP service station but I have no idea how to explain which one
. The line then goes deads after Eva tells me that her partner is going
to call me. 15 minutes later my phone rings and I pass it to the petrol
station attendent. After lots of gesturing we think we understand that
we are to wait where we are and they will come and meet us. We sit
tight. A short while later another attendent tells us that we should be
waiting at the shell station down the road and after some persuading we
try to follow his directions. At last we find a shell station and a
young girl comes running up smiling and out of her mouth spills the
warmest south london accent you can imagine. This is gosha, Eva's
daughter and then we meet Eva who feeds us at speed, tells us that we
don't have to play until 9.30 asks us if we want to play an extra gig
the following night, we say OK, she makes a phone call and then we head
off for the mine.
kieran: Stressful event tring to get to the show. Polish roads are amazing in the most mindbending of ways. The Skansen Mine, however, was amazing. We loaded our gear into the mine, down various tunnels to this underground cavern. The mine is now a museam to the coal minning history of the region and is maintained as such. And it was cold, a regular 6 degrees constant, the only show Ive played where I didn't break into sweat. Very enjoyable. A local took some great photos that Im hoping to track down. After we finished playing, a member of the audience started talking something about trains. I had interperated this as having something to do with going to a pub somewhere via train (of which I wasn't to keen as I was quite tired after the long day). What came to pass was that the train was infact part of the museam and followed circular track through the tunnels of the mine. Bizzare, us still in costume hop onto the train along with all the audience and do a loop-de-loop ride. People started banging/drumming on the side of the train and singing some local song as we went round. I later spoke to a local guy who said that although he had lived there all his life, he had never had the opportunity to take a ride on the train. Very privilaged I felt. Starting to feel better with tis cold, finally breaking up.

THU
chrissie: Tarnowskie Gory This was the funniest gig
in a tiny new club that had just been open for 6 days. Setting up the
gig had happened in just 2 days as for the previous 2 weeks all the
pubs and bars in Poland had to remain shut in mourning for the Pope. So
everything was very last minute. However we had the best night and the
place was full and the bar manager was wrapped.
15
FRI
chrissie: One hell of a journey back to Tabor.
Getting out of Zabrze was the biggest hassle and took us hours. So good
to get home to Tabor and the promise of our own beds. It continues to
amaze me how the seven of us travel so easily together in such a
confined space. The banter is hilarious and we seem to have so many
photos of each of us curled up sleeping amongst bags and coats and
instruments and stray bits of costume.
16
SAT Tabor, MC Orion (CZ) (mr sterile Assembly only)
chrissie: Sterile at Orion At last a gig in our home
town. Sadly not as big a crowd as we had expected as there were two
other big events on too. But still those that did turn out had a great
time and we played the tighest set to date.
kieran: It was a small show at the Orion, apparently
there was a lot of other things on in town, but we were still happy
with the way we played to the people that were there. Small crowds can
sometimes affect the way the show goes but I was really impressed how
the rest of the band played like it was too a full room. Heaps of fun.
Had a Ditzy practice earlier in the day in preparation for the Sedm
show.
17
SUN Tabor, Cafebar Sedm, (Ditzy Squall only)
chrissie: Ditzy at Sedm. A special gig for me as I
felt Ditzy had a chance to spread its wings a bit and we included the 3
new songs we have pulled together here into the set. Sedm was the
perfect venue. A really mellow/cafe bar on the town square and very
much the local haunt for those at CESTA and many of the local musicians
we have got to know. Played really well and the reception was great. The
perfect end to the first 18 days.
kieran: I really enjoyed the show at Sedm. I felt it
was the best Ditzy show to date and we finally got the 3 new songs into
the set and it felt as if thet sat really comfortably alongside the
others.
18
MON day off in Tabor
chrissie: Tabor Day off. Lots of sleeping and eating
and soaking up the space that Cesta has to offer. The old mill in which
the project is based is set in the bottom of a valley by a big river.
When you look up from the garden you see the monastry and other old
houses and stone walls and there is an amazing sense of stillness for a
place that literally hums inside. Its spring here and everything green
is beginning to break out. During the day when its sunny its bloody
hot, but inside the house it can be like a fridge. In each room,
including bedrooms there are wood burning stoves and so far I haven't
gone to bed without my hat. In the evening took Chris and Hilary out
for dinner.
19
TUE Klatovy Canceled due to flooding in the venue
chrissie: Tabor Day off. Aaron up to Prague for the
day to meet Cara, Elisa and Fran. Kieran Jana and I chill in Tabor and
make preparations for Chris' birthday bash.
kieran: Today is Chris's birthday. Aaron, fran,
elisa and cara are all in Prague. I remain in Tabor to try and fix the
broken website and all seems to be going ok. Spent some time cutting
kiddling in preparation for the evening. CESTA has its own sauna built
by chris and hilary, and the plan for the evening was for us here to
hae a sauna, some food and then a video on their newly fixed TV.
Firstly the sauna. Found in the sub-basement of the building, the fire
gets cranking in a burner designed by chris and built locally. We pile
on in happily as the outside temp is dropping, I hear a dripping sound
and try to locate it only to realise that it is me leaking at a
substantial volume. Sweat city, chris has particular techniques to make
the whole experince quite intense. Im surprised by how much
I enjoy it. Get stinking hot, then race outside to sit on the step in
the cool night air, then back to the sauna for more.
Next is tea, Pivo, pirogi (which Jana mada, a traditional food stuff
with potato and cheese, or a variante of meat filling). Brilliant. The
night ended with a screening of a short film made by a Czech film maker
about SABOT and the classic Spinal Tap to complete the tour experience.
20
WED Susice, Canceled
kieran: CESTA is preparing for another conference
this weekend and Chris and Hil are readying the place. We help by
chopping a mountain of firewood, and general tidying up around the
place. Managed to fix the problems we have been having with getting the
images off Aarons camera and you can now see the results. Fran has some
excellent photos developed and Im going to try and get those scaned and
loaded up after the shows in Poland. Its gratiying to see so many
people are looking at the website, and that so many are taking
advantage of the downloads page. Its the busiest month even on this
site, Slovakia is in the front for the most downloads...keep going
people.

THU
kieran:
Left Tabor at 7.30AM and drove, drove, drove, drove, drove to
Bydgoszcz. Thirteen and a half hours. Sore ass man. Uneventful trip,
stoped by the cops once, no complications OR fines, nil hassles at the
boarder-excellent. I still find boarder crossing kinda nervy.Managed to
get our way into MOZG after a bit of an effort. Great venue, an
independant film night is on tonight and the place is full. We load our
gear into the room were staying in, lock the van up in secure parking,
and go get Pizza for tea. Then well deserved sleep.
22
FRI Bydgoszcz, Mozg
(Poland)
kieran: A gentle day just kicking around the city,
very pretty. Finding places to drink coffee and eating potato pancakes
is a personal favourite pastime. Set up for the show at 5, had a very
thouragh sound check and a great show to a small but totally receptive
crowd.
23
SAT Gryfino (Poland), Gryfinski
Dom Kultury
kieran: A most uneventful days driving to Gryfino
until the end where we missed the Gryfino turn-off and had to drive to
the Polish-German boarder to turn around. The show is held in the
picture theatre, great sound system, brillant sound man, and a
wonderful host in Prasemek. Took us to tea at a Polish-Chinese-Indian
resturant. It is our last show for the tour and emotions are starting
to present themselves. The show opened with a band from Szczecin called
Solaris 3, a sort of Polish/Billy Childish space-rock crossover. Ditzy
went next, which was a bit of a surprise-we thought there were 2 local
bands, turned out to be 1. Kinda hard show with all us three breaking
our instruments in one way or another. sterile then went on and it was
such a wonderful last show , everyone played well, the audience were
right there with us. And I got plenty of laughs when I gave my intro
speech in Polish. It was sooo good.
24
SUN
kieran: The end day. We drive into to Szczecin to
drop Cara, Elisa, Aaron and his sister off at the train station. This
makes the end of the band in its current shape. Its been a wonderful
time over the last couple of years and having to say goodbye was/is
never easy. Elisa and Cara are off to London via Frankfurt, then Caras
back to China and Elisa off to base herself in London. Anyone looking
for a bass player?
We then drive to Tabor via Germany.
25
MON
kieran: Tidying up loose ends. Take the van back,
send stuff back to NZ in the post, return equipment lent to us by the
very generous locals, sort out other bits and piece. Will be sad to
leave. Had a special private performance of Kackala, Hilarys accapella
group, I'd love to see the whole group - costumes and all.
26
TUE fly to Japan
kieran: Were up early in order to get to the airport
in Praha. It is a sad thing to be leaving after such an amazing
experience, but the consolation is that we are already taking about
returning. We get on the plane with no hassles and have a 11 hour
flight plus stop-over on the way to Osaka.
27
WED Osaka, Bears w/ Limited
Express (has gone?), squimaoto
& Hosome
kieran: In transit we gain an extra 6 hours and
arrive in the Kansai airport at 7.30AM. A small holdup at immigration
for me, but it didnt stall us for too long. We are collected by Ariko
and Reo, 2 musicians in ni-hao! who we will be playing with tomorrow
night. Ariko takes a bus back to where we will be staying , and we go
by car and get lost and take the scenic detour for 3 hours around Osaka
city. Very very tired. We grab a couple of hours sleep before we head
off to Bears for soundcheck. Squimaoto played first, a three piece of
drums and 2 guitars and vocals. Swirling, lush, and at 2 guitars and
vocals. Swirling, lush, and at time randomesque tunes that I totally
enjoy. Next was Hosome, a 4 piece group, bass, drums, Hosome, a 4 piece
group, bass, drums, guitar, and keyboard/sampler. They played a very
short but and keyboard/sampler. They played a very short but hugely
entertaining set of tight, rapidly changing compositions.
Again total enjoyment. Limited Express were 3, apart from a bit of bass
problems at the end of their set,i.e.it problems at the end of their
set,i.e.it stoped working, it was a great set and im so glad to see
them again. We were last and played really well, tight and punchy. Felt
really good about it, and loved the responce from the audience after
the show.
! thing i really love about this place is the thing i really love about
this place is the apparent total inclusion of women in the music scene,
there seems to be heaps performing and creating lots of interesting
music. And its not labels as `girl band` or anything like that. The
music stands on its on value.
After the show we went for food, ala trad Japanese style and now for
food, ala trad Japanese style and now Im going to bed after what feels
like a very long day.
28 THUR
Kyoto, Cafe indepandent w/ Ni-Hao,
shizenkai no okite,
& mu-neujohn.
chrissie: A perfect day. After sleeping in, we spent
a few mellow hours being tourists ushered around by the wonderful Kogi,
from Limited Express. We visited a huge castle with the most amazing
Nightingale floor, every step you take makes it squeak (an ingenious
security measure). T
hen we tasted the flip side of Japanese culture in the form of the most
tranquil cafe I have ever had the pleasure to frequent. It was set in
an old house and the minimalism was such a tonic to the mad
commercialism in which it nestled. Also it was full of books to browse,
a great CD collection and a postcard prefect garden to gaze into.
Anyway the beautiful respite passed all too quickly and then we were
whisked off to Cafe Independent and our last soundcheck. Another great
looking venue, although in stark contrast to the the dark grunge punk
of Bears. Again another underground venue, but this time a large mellow
styly cafe serving hip food and home to Parallax Records in the back
corner. Anyway we're first up for soundcheck and then off to do a bit
of toy shopping for the kids and then back for the gig which this time
began at the later time of 7.30pm. And what a gig! First up shizenkai
no okite, (The rule of Life) who played a storming set. Angular
pop/punk, great little songs sandwiched in between stinging guitar and
such wicked delivery. Loved it. When they came off stage all four of us
simultaneously pounced on them and after much laughing and bowing, I
think they got the message that we liked their band very much. Next up
were the sweeping guitarscapes of mu-neujohn followed by the madness of
our three friends from Ni-hao. This band is fantastic and embraces
everything I love about playing music; totally engaging performance,
right out there, pushing the boundaries but without any sense of
wanking, just pure entertainment, tight well crafted edgy songs
delivered at full tilt. Loved it. And then us, full of the emotion of
playing our last gig of the tour. You could cut the air in the room
just before we began, just the sense of anticipation. I confess my
heart skipped a few beats, but then we jumped in and just grinned our
way thro' the set. The response was great and again when we walked off
stage there was much bowing and laughing and shaking of hands and
jumping up and down. Later once we had packed down most of us who had
played that night cruised off into the depths of Kyoto and dined and
laughed the night away.
29
Fri Kyoto
chrissie: Our last day in Japan and on tour. My head
is a swirling mess of mixed emotions. Didn't sleep much and woke before
everyone else. Got dressed and 'borrowed' JJ's bike and took off into
the sunshine to explore the back streets. Kyoto is so beautiful. It is
a city full of temples. Some of which are huge and austere, others are
tiny sanctuaries tucked between cafes or crammed between houses and
flats. It was great to be on a bike. Everyone in Kyoto seems to have a
bike, young and old, punk to pensioner and nearly all the bikes have
baskets on the front and bells on the handle bars. Anyway after an hour
of cruising I return to the flat as the rest of the crew are waking and
washing. Then off for our last excursion, mine is an hours shopping
whilst the others brave a gory exhibiton at the museum. Sadly the
moment I have been dreading is at my feet and the journey home begins
with a swift car ride to the airport.
30 Sat Kyoto
chrissie: Home again. Feel on the one hand numb and
on the other quietly elated. It has been so amazing to be totally
devoted to playing music. But the trip has been so much more than that.
It has been about making links between people. It has been a chance to
make spaces to listen and to talk, spaces to exchange ideas and not
just about music but about what its like to live in these different
places and to begin to get a handle on the politics and social context
in which these musicians and artists live and make new work. I hope,
especially when we played in Eastern Europe, that more people will be
inspired to make new work and get out there and perform it. I hope we
can get some of the bands that we met over to NZ to perform. But for
now it is back to the juggle between the day jobs and our great kids
who I have missed so much and an empty month free of projects. I raise
my glass to the fantastic six with whom I have shared the same air for
the last month. Big upps!! Nastravee!!
kieran: Exhausted, elated, totally amazed at what
we've managed to achieve as this mad circus crusing around the back
roads of eastern Europe, sometimes lost. It really felt like we were
doing something extraordinary, you caught yourslf on those moment and
thought to yourself 'fuck, this is real'. I loved every minute. There
were dramas, heaps, and heaps of laughing, in jokes and jokes shared
with new friends, I learnt so much, about my ownself, my abilities, the
friends I was travelling with, the fantastic people we met who were
keen to share with us their own stories. I feel indebted to you all,
and personally richer for the experience. I loved the huge contrast
from East Europe to Japan, and noted the similarities. Everywhere we
went I felt like we were beautifully hosted and welcomed into their
lives. Again, i am the better for it. It has been ahuge undertaking to
make this maddness come to fruition, but we did it. And it was with the
wonderful help of so many people.
This list will be long, and I do not mean to forget you if your name
does not appear.
THANKS TO...CESTA, Chris & Hilary from SABOT,
Petra-for taking us under her wing, Milhaus at SEDM, Deverova Chyba,
C-for the use of the gear, the guy who we borrowed drums from, Martin
and Dan and all the rest at VRAH, Kuba and the rest of the crew from
Liberte-its a great thing happening in both centres, Lubo, Slavka
& Martin-Chiki Liki tua, Ewa & Marek-for opening your
home, Paval-for bring Ewa to the other end of Poland, Hania at MOZG and
Micheal(sorry about the spelling), Prasemek in Gryfino, J.J., Yukari,
Koji, Reo, Ariko, and all the others in Japan who made us feel so
welcome-arigato.
And at home, I couldn't thank more our friend Shane Hammond for the
raffle and other help, Aidan and Rob (twice) for all the work on the
albums, James Robinson, Fergus Collinson, HAPPY, Cheryy's Gemstones and
the others who helped us fundraise, everyone in our community who got
totally behind our adventure, Trish & Brian, Anne Butler, and
Of course-Eppy, Alice and Briaane XXXXXX, to all who emailed enthusiasm
and slipped us a few extra bucks to put towards the tour, Prahna cafe,
Guitar Gallery...whew...
And to the 6 others who shared this adventure with me, Chrissie, Aaron,
Elissa, Francesca, Cara, and Jana.
Thanks, Im glad it was with you lot
